How to Apply to Become a Music Friendly Community
The city council or fiscal court will pass a resolution to begin the process to become a Certified Kentucky Music Friendly Community. The mayor or county/judge can also sign an executive order to begin the process. As the voice of tourism and related economic development in their community, a local tourism commission or tourism director can also begin the process, but are urged to work with and coordinate with other local leaders.
The mayor, county/judge or tourism director will appoint a Local Music Ambassador to work directly with the Governor’s Office of Music.
Apply for certification highlighting the community resources and support for the music industry, particularly live music and assets that attract artists and tourists.
After working through the process with the Governor’s Office of Music, there will be a joint announcement with the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, which administers the Governor’s Office of Music, publicizing the city or county as a Kentucky Music Friendly Community.

Local Action
The city council or fiscal court will pass a resolution to begin the process of becoming a Certified Kentucky Music Friendly Community. The mayor or county/judge can also sign an executive order to begin the process. The local tourism commission or tourism director can also begin the process, but are urged to work with and coordinate with other local leaders.
Music Office Ambassador
The mayor, county/judge, or tourism director must appoint a Local Music Ambassador to apply for designation and work directly with the Governor’s Office of Music. This is a point of contact, within the city or county government, to work with the industry, local leaders and the Governor’s Office of Music. The ambassador will work with the state through the certification process.
Reporting
The Local Music Ambassador will complete and submit an annual survey to the Office of Music about the social, economic, and tourism impact of live music on your community.
Supporting Music
The ambassador and other leaders in the community will work with the Office of Music to encourage local and state policy and programs that support live music and the music industry, including placing the Office of Music in statute and creating a tax rebate program for venues and small festivals.
